Hurricane Sandy hit us hard. The eve of it brought cause for the cancellation of the 5K race that I was supposed to run on October 28th.
And, on at 8:40 PM on October 29th, the power here went out when the storm hit our area. We had nothing – no lights, phone, internet or heat. That lasted for five days.
Finally, also on November 3rd, also at 8:40 PM, as strange as that is, the power was restored.
We’re still not out of the woods. There’s a gasoline crisis now. And, another storm may be coming on Wednesday.
But, those five days were a strain on me and my family. It was a period that we will never forget. It was hard, dark, stressful and cold.
Nonetheless, we still had each other and we had our house – and some food, but, not a lot of food. I know a few people, personally, who lost everything – their house, car, computers, clothes, etc. So, I have no right to complain.
My eating during this time was terrible. A lot or meat, before it went bad since the fridge was out, a lot of bread, and a ton of nuts. And, I ate more than I normally would to keep warm (since we still had a stove and could cook) and to offset the stress. (Yes, I dipped into the kids cupcakes and cookies every night.)
The only exercise that I got was yesterday when I went for a two-mile run to see who was starting to get power back in the neighborhood.
I feel very fat.
It’s funny. I started this “X Days Until I Turn 50″ thing with the goal to get myself in the best shape of my life by the time I was fifty. And, now, I am probably in the worst shape that I have been…in…I dunno…in maybe a year or more?
